Positive Interaction Techniques

Caregiver reviews and utilizes the following procedures to foster positive interaction with the client.
1.  Stay pleasant, calm, and reassuring.
2.  Use simple sentences.
3.  Help maintain self esteem.
4.  Use nonverbal cues.

Techniques for Managing Catastrophic Reactions
Review CD Track 3 for more information regarding these techniques.
Caregiver reviews and utilizes the following procedures to manage a possible catastrophic reaction.
1.  Reassure the client.
2.  Reduce outside stimulations and hazards.
3.  If necessary, remove the client from his or her environment.
4.  Reassure the client again, using a gentle touch if possible.
5.  Redirect the client to a quiet, soothing area.
6.  Be patient.
7.  If necessary and safe, leave client alone.
8.  Don’t address the catastrophic reaction afterwards.
9.  Analyze the reaction internally. 

Techniques for Avoiding Excess Disability
Review CD Track 4 for more information regarding these techniques.
Caregiver reviews and utilizes the following procedures to reverse his or her own behavior which may be contributing to excess disability.
1.  Accept the inevitable decline of the client.
2.  Regularly assess the progression of the client’s dementia.  The assessment should include an analyzation of the clients activities of daily living and PALMER symptoms.  PALMER symptoms are the basic symptoms of dementia.  They are as follows:

  • Perception and organization of movement
  • Attention span
  • Language ability
  • Memory
  • Emotional control
  • Reasoning and judgment

3.  Adapt the amount and type of help directed toward specific tasks. 

The COPE Technique
Review CD Track 5 for more information regarding these techniques.
Caregiver reviews and utilizes the following procedures as a reminder of his or her own daily needs.
1.  Communicate your fatigue and/or stress.
2.  Organize and simplify your life.
3.  Prioritize your responsibilities and other tasks.
4.  Energize your mind and body by taking time for yourself and maintaining a healthy diet and exercise routine.

Relaxation Techniques
Review CD Track 5 for more information regarding these techniques.
Caregiver reviews and utilizes the following procedures to relax.
Breathing:
1.  Close your eyes.
2.  Take a deep breath through your nose.
3.  Exhale through your mouth.
4.  Repeat ten to twelve times.

Visual Relaxation:
1.  Sit down.
2.  Relax your muscles.
3.  Visualize the place where you feel most relaxed.

Body Relaxation:
1.  Focus on your relaxing your toes as much as possible.
2.  Relax your feet.
3.  Relax your ankles.
4.  Work all the way up to your head, remember to relax jaw muscles and eye muscles.

Non Reality Based Communication Techniques
Review CD Track 6 for more information regarding these techniques.
Caregiver reviews and utilizes the following procedures to implement a humanistic approach to treating the client.
1.  Make the physical environment work. 
2.  Know that communication remains possible. 
3.  Focus only on remaining skills. 
4.  Live in the client’s world. 
5.  Enrich the client’s life. 

The "Spaced Retrieval" Technique
Review CD Track 7 for more information regarding these techniques.
Caregiver reviews and utilizes the following procedures to help enhance the retrieval process of a client’s memory processes.
1.  Present information.
2.  Allow 5 seconds for processing.
3.  Question the client to retrieve the information.
4.  Increase the interval to 10 seconds.
5. Repeat the presentation and questioning stages.
6. Progressively increase the interval, i.e., 20 seconds, 30, 40, and 60 seconds.  Increase in each interval after 60 should be done in 30 second increments.
