Note: Along the left side of the “Emotional States and the Dimensions of Internal and External Controls” chart is a column that will allow your client to gauge what level of control they have over their own life, or happiness, based on their emotional states at the time. For example, someone who is in a state of happiness, has a sense of control over their own life. However, someone who is in a state of unhappiness, may feel a sense of panic, or a complete lack of control when thinking about their life.

If you have a client who is habitually ending up in the external column of the chart, it may be helpful for them to write a list of twenty reasons why they are unhappy. This may give your client a starting point to change their thinking patterns from external to internal controls, one problem at a time. This may also help them to determine whether they have “gone too far” in giving up control over their own happiness, and allow your client to take back control of their emotional life.
