1.  Separate HIV from a sense of punishment.  You are not being punished.
2.  Understand that guilt can be a useless emotion.

4.  Acknowledge your own self worth.  For example, what do your friends like about you?  Other than your reasons for feeling guilty, what makes you who you are?

1.  Be clear about why you want to tell a specific person.  Do you want sympathy, special treatment, or support?
2.  Consider the worst case scenario.  Some people may become hysterical.  Think of ways to deal with that.
3.  Give the person plenty of time to process the information.
4.  Consider choosing a setting that offered plenty of time and privacy.

1.  Deny doubt regarding the future.

3.  Behave cautiously, but embrace life.

Adherence Evaluation

Client reviews and utilizes the following criteria to evaluate his or her ability to maintain adherence to treatment medications.
1.  Purchase a thirty-day supply of once-a-day vitamins.
2.  Get a calendar and count out thirty days.  Mark your beginning date and your end date.
3.  Write your beginning date and end date on the bottle.
4.  After thirty days, check the vitamin bottle to see how many are left.
5.  Evaluate yourself using the percentage scale. 

  • One pill remaining.  Congratulations, you’re doing better than 95 percent.
  • Two pills remaining.  You’re scoring about 93 percent, which is still above average.
  • Three pills remaining.  At 90 percent adherence, you’re on the right track.  Consider why you missed those three doses.  How could you have remembered them?
More than three pills remaining.  Anything over three pills is less than ninety percent.  Unfortunately, with HIV treatment, you’ll need to earn an "A" or not take the test at all.
